About This Picture...
In the upper left, you can see
the tail end of Lyell Canyon, about seven miles
from the trail head in Tuolumne
meadows. This is our third day out.
Even though it was August, the
first two nights in the canyon it was so cold
that not only did our breath
condense on the inside of our tents,
but it froze into sheets of ice!
Though we mostly carry
freeze-dried food (since we are usually out for
more than a week in the back
country and have to carry all our supplies
on our backs) the first day we each
carried extra supplies to have a
steak dinner at the first night's camp.
We had barbequed corn on the cob,
giant baked potatoes, four inch and a half rib
eye steaks,
Boddington beers, and chocolate pudding for dessert.
This picture was taken part way
up the climb toward Donahue Pass
(at a little over eleven thousand feet) which
we hoped to conquer the following day.
